Exclusive: Tan Dhesi says Argentinian threats make it more crucial than ever that PM increase defence spending Javier Milei’s threats to the Falkland Islands make it even more important that Andy Burnham increase defence spending immediately, according to the Labour chair of the defence committee. Tan Dhesi said the comments by the Argentinian president this week show why the government should raise military spending to 3% of GDP by 2030. But he said Burnham’s plans remain mired in confusion after the prime minister appeared to reassure him that the 2030 target would be hit, only for Downing…

How China’s green tech is undercutting Trump’s ‘drill, baby, drill’ oil strategy in Africa

Cost appears to be a deciding factor for most African countries when it comes to energy as they observe the factors that influence US and Chinese policy decisions. In a sign of the contrasting energy strategies pursued by Washington and Beijing, US President Donald Trump says “drill, baby, drill” while China drives a leap towards renewable energy. Heading to America to bridge the gap in US-China relations

Before boarding my flight to Boston late last month, I spent the better part of three days doing something I never imagined I would do in more than 30 years of covering China: scrubbing my phone. Old emails, screenshots, WeChat threads that might be read the wrong way, anything that could be misconstrued in an airport interview room – all deleted, just in case. I was not being paranoid. I was following advice now routinely passed among Chinese travellers to the United States: carry a clean...

Es la tercera vez que el gobierno le pide al máximo tribunal que intervenga, que ha permitido que el plan avance, pero no ha resuelto si es legal.

An AI hacking trick is now being used to split the word ‘funding’ in spam

For two years, invisible Unicode characters have been the neat trick of AI security research. You hide instructions inside them. A person sees nothing. A language model reads them and does as it is told. Microsoft has now found somebody using the same characters for something far less clever. They were splitting up the word […] This story continues at The Next Web

Popular brain supplement linked to shorter lifespan in men

A large study involving more than 270,000 people has linked higher blood levels of the amino acid tyrosine to a shorter lifespan in men. Using both observational data and genetic analysis, researchers found that elevated tyrosine could potentially reduce male life expectancy by nearly a year, while no significant effect appeared in women. Tyrosine is found naturally in protein-rich foods and is also sold as a supplement for boosting focus and mental performance, making the finding especially intriguing.

Scientists find breast cancer cells hiding behind protective “shields”

Researchers have mapped breast tumors in striking detail and uncovered hidden pockets of dormant cancer cells that may help explain why cancer can return after treatment. Unlike rapidly dividing cells, these quiet cells can essentially hibernate, allowing them to evade chemotherapy and reactivate later. The team found that they are often surrounded by immune cells and connective tissue cells that may act like a protective shield.

Scientists discover a hidden problem with this popular sugar substitute

Sorbitol, a sugar alcohol commonly used in sugar-free candy, gum, and other low-calorie foods, may not be as harmless as it seems. Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis found that the body can convert sorbitol into a form of fructose in the liver, potentially triggering some of the same harmful metabolic effects linked to fructose.

[Series] The changing therapeutic landscape of small-cell lung cancer

Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an exceptionally aggressive malignancy: highly proliferative, heterogeneous, and frequently metastatic at diagnosis. Although initially responsive to chemotherapy, such responses are typically transient, and recurrent disease has been largely refractory to standard cytotoxics. The past decade has been notable for major advances in our understanding of SCLC biology, and this preclinical progress is now informing multiple novel therapeutic approaches for this disease.
