‘I believed the hype’: the white South Africans denied refugee status in the US

Drive to save thousands of Afrikaners from false claims of ‘white genocide’ appears to show signs of slowing When Donald Trump announced in February 2025 that the US would accept Afrikaners from South Africa as refugees, many white South Africans who believed that they were victims of racism in their country thought that their prayers had been answered. However, in the past few months, dozens of applicants to the refugee programme have been rejected, with many left dismayed and confused as to why they would be left to face what Trump has falsely claimed is a “white genocide” in South Africa.…

The London hospital funded by donors who invested in the slave trade

St Barts is one of many UK institutions whose benefactors were involved in the trafficking of enslaved Africans Inside the Great Hall of St Bartholomew’s North Wing, alongside stately portraits of the apostle from whom London’s oldest hospital takes its name and King Henry VIII, extravagant commemorative boards adorn the walls. The Great Hall was a grand, formal space where governors weighed their philanthropic donations and drafted their wills, many while investing in the stock of companies built on the trafficking of enslaved Africans. Today, many of those donors are commemorated in acrylic…

Japanese delegations flock to China, but thaw hinges on Takaichi mending ties

With bilateral ties in a deep freeze since late last year, a flurry of planned China visits by Japanese lawmakers and business leaders has been interpreted as an attempt to break the ice ahead of November’s Apec summit in China. However, analysts warned that these efforts to carve out a diplomatic opening with Beijing might not achieve much unless Tokyo sends a clearer signal to mend ties from the very top. Relations reached their lowest point in a decade following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae...

Huawei’s US trial puts jury to the test amid China, Iran links

The unique circumstances surrounding Huawei Technologies’ landmark trial in a US court made jury selection especially important to ensuring a fair trial for the Chinese tech giant, according to US litigation experts. Known as voir dire, the process allows the presiding judge and two legal teams to question prospective jurors before the trial begins to identify possible bias and conflicts that could impede their ability to adjudicate the case in a “fair and impartial” way. Richard Gabriel,...

Beijing threatens ‘serious consequences’ after Panama lawmakers support Taiwan

China has warned Panama of “serious consequences” after most of the country’s lawmakers set up a parliamentary exchange group with Taiwan, defying pressure from Beijing’s embassy and a public disavowal by their own president. The warning came from foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, who said on Monday that the group seriously violated the one-China principle upheld by Panama and urged what he called “those few politicians” to “see the real picture”. Beijing had noted the Panamanian...

Trump's latest round of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods now in effect

A new round of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods took effect just after midnight on Tuesday, adding 50 per cent levies to 110 products ranging from specific cheeses to motorboats, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and furniture. A decision to simultaneously remove some tariffs shows that the U.S. is paying attention to which costs get passed down to the American consumer, experts say.

Rethinking the global health system for a new international order

Nature Medicine, Published online: 14 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41591-026-04622-0 In this Comment, we argue for a global health system that recognizes and supports countries as the primary agents of action, oriented around global public goods and collective action, and served by a leaner set of global and regional institutions. We present a potential vision for the functions and distribution of labor in the system to inform ongoing reform discussions and draw critique, dissent and amendment.

Scientists map massive layer of life just beneath our feet

Directly beneath our feet stretches a world both smaller and much, much larger than the one we know. Scientists have just begun mapping what may well be the largest piece of infrastructure on Earth: a network of fungal threads that is 68 quadrillion miles long. It’s alive! And we thought we’d mapped just about everything there is to map on this planet: continents, voting patterns, bird migration routes, alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary, and Starbucks locations near you. We’ve logged and named almost every fold of the visible world. And yet until June, the most extensive piece of…

Agentic commerce is loosening the grocery aisle’s grip on the shopper

Donated livers can be made biologically younger

Once an organ is removed from a donor’s body, the clock starts ticking. Surgeons usually flush the organ with a preservative solution, bag it, and put it on ice—where it immediately starts to degrade. The team has a matter of hours to get it into a recipient’s body. There’s another option—one that has been growing…

Scientists discover strange link between low vitamin D and pain

Low vitamin D levels may make recovery from breast cancer surgery more painful, according to a study of 184 women undergoing mastectomy. Patients with vitamin D deficiency were three times more likely to experience moderate to severe pain during the first 24 hours after surgery and also used substantially more of the opioid painkiller tramadol. Plague was killing entire families thousands of years before the Black Death

Ancient DNA reveals that plague was already killing hunter-gatherers in Siberia 5,500 years ago, long before cities and flea-driven epidemics. The prehistoric strains may have been especially dangerous because they carried a genetic factor capable of provoking severe immune reactions.

Cancer is rising in younger adults. Faster biological aging may help explain why

Cancer rates are rising in adults under 55, and new research suggests accelerated biological aging may be one piece of the puzzle. Scientists found that people from more recent generations tended to have bodies that appeared biologically older than those of earlier generations at the same chronological age. Greater biological age acceleration was linked to a higher risk of early onset cancers, with specific patterns seen for lung, gastrointestinal, uterine and colorectal cancers.

De novo mutations bridge parental reproductive factors and offspring health

Nature Medicine, Published online: 14 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41591-026-04676-0 Whole-genome sequencing of 7,851 parent–offspring families enabled the identification of parent-of-origin and post-zygotic de novo mutations that were associated with distinct procedures of assisted reproductive technology (ART), independently of parental age at conception. Increased paternal mutational burden statistically mediates the effects of advanced parental age and ART on gestational duration and other birth outcomes.

Large-scale mapping of microproteins in the aged human brain

Nature Aging, Published online: 14 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s43587-026-01215-x Microproteins, small proteins of 100–150 amino acids, are largely absent from reference proteomes and have been overlooked in brain and aging research. An atlas of the aged human brain catalogs over 1,000 high-confidence microproteins, including one encoded by the MKKS gene that is reduced in Alzheimer’s disease and regulates energy production in microglia.
