Trump’s AI liability push leaves rogue-agent blame unclear, Bloomberg says

The Trump administration is betting that the threat of lawsuits will keep AI companies honest. But it is far from clear who would pay when an AI agent goes rogue, Maggie Eastland reported for Bloomberg. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and former White House AI czar David Sacks argue that existing liability laws work better than […] This story continues at The Next Web

Aspirin rarely used for colorectal cancer prevention

People with Lynch syndrome have a significantly increased risk of developing colorectal cancer and other types of cancer due to a hereditary predisposition. The CAPP2 study had already shown in this high-risk group that acetylsalicylic acid can significantly reduce the long-term risk of colorectal cancer. The study examined a comparatively high daily dose of 600 milligrams. The recently published international CaPP3 study now suggests that even a lower dose of 100 milligrams daily could have a similar cancer-preventive effect while causing fewer side effects, particularly bleeding…

Intensive breathing linked to altered consciousness and brain communication

Intensive breathing exercises can reduce blood flow to the brain by up to 45% and alter communication between brain networks, according to a new brain-imaging study. Participants reported experiences resembling some effects of psychedelic drugs, including altered perception, vivid mental imagery, a sense of unity and changes in self-experience. The researchers, presenting the work at the ECNP Congress in Munich, say changes in brain communication, rather than reduced blood flow alone, appear to be key to the altered state.

Bowel cancer “melted away” after immunotherapy, then stayed away

A short course of immunotherapy before surgery may offer remarkably durable protection for some patients with stage two or three bowel cancer. In the NEOPRISM-CRC trial, 32 patients with a specific genetic form of bowel cancer received pembrolizumab for up to nine weeks before surgery instead of the usual post-surgery chemotherapy. After nearly three years of follow-up, none of the patients had experienced a cancer recurrence, including those who still had small traces of disease after treatment.

[Perspectives] John Wong: making an impact on population health at scale

“I’m concerned that the narrative now around ageing populations is one of doom and gloom. But long-lived populations are not the problem. The problem is that we haven’t allowed people to get to an older age healthy”, says John Wong, Executive Director of the Centre for Population Health at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Executive Director of The Yong Pung How and Yong Wei-Woo Centre at the National University Health System (NUHS), Singapore. “Two-thirds of the world is now below the fertility replacement rate, and unless we keep our populations healthy throughout their whole…

[Comment] 21st century global threats to health are not what you think

The Lancet Commission on 21st century global threats to health's report by Christopher J L Murray and colleagues uses forecasts based on expected cumulative amenable disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) to quantify and compare threats from 2025 to 2100.1 The Commission's intent is to equip governments with the tools to make smart long-term decisions that reduce risk based on “systematic, repeatable risk assessment and preparedness planning” as opposed to “short-termism and localism”.
